BRUCE W. BARNES

LTC Barnes currently serves the Chief Information Officer of Brooke Army Medical Center and is poised to take the Command of the 6th Medical Recruiting Battalion out of Las Vegas, NV in Summer 2026.

LTC Barnes entered the military with a comission from the United States Military Academy as a Medical Service Corps Officer in 2008. As a Second Lieutenant, he was assigned to the 575 Area Support Medical Company, 56th Multifunctional Medical Battalion out of Joint Base Lewis-Mcchord, WA as a Evacuation Platoon Leader. He deployed with them to Kandahar, Afghanistan in support fo Operation Enduring Freedom from 2009 to 2010. Upon return he was selected to also serve the Executive Officer for the company. Once promoted to Captain, he was assigned to the Medical Research and Material Command (now MRDC) as a Deputy Project Manager for Medical Research Information Systems where he helped deploy an FDA regulated electronic data capture system for clinical research trials to initial operational capability. MAJ Barnes was then selected to be the Chief, Information Management at the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangkok, Thailand from 2013 to 2016. He was selected for company command of the Seattle Medical Recruiting Company from 2016 to 2018. Upon promoting to Major he reported to the University of Hawai’I at Manoa where he earned his PhD and was selected to instruct at the prestigious Army-Baylor MHA/MBA program. He served as the Executive Officer, Deputy MBA Program Director, and reached the academic rank of Associate Professor. 

LTC Barnes holds a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, a MS in Information Technology from the University of Maryland Global Campus, and a BS in Information Technology w/ Honors from the United States Military Academy at West Point. In addition, he holds a Project Management Professional certificate from the Project Management Institute and is a Certified Professional in Health Information Management Systems.

LTC Barnes’ military education and training include graduating from the Army Basic Officer Leadership Course II, the Army Medical Department Basic Officer Leadership Course III, AMEDD Captain’s Career Course, Recruiting Commander Course, Intermediate Information Systems Acquisitions Course, Command and General Staff College and the Pre-command Course.

LTC Barnes’ awards and decorations include: Army Parachutists Badge, Master Combat Action Badge, Expert Field Medical Badge, Combat Action Badge, Senior Army Instructor Badge, Army Recruiter Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal (4), Army Achievement Medal (3), Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, Meritorious Unit Commendation and Army Superior Unit award (2).
